Doug Coe – Autumn Sunset

I wanted to explore asymmetric double weave turned twill blocks. I created non-regular block widths across the fabric, followed by non-regular warp layer exchanges — four alternating sections repeated 5.5 times for the shawl’s length. On surface A, sections are further divided into 1/3 and 3/1 alternating twill, while surface B arranges 2/2 twill in a bullseye formation. Both surfaces use repeating cycles of weft colors, producing diversity and unity simultaneously.

Doug Coe

Doug Coe became mesmerized with weaving at 8 years old at a State Fair in Danbury, CT. This fascination lay dormant for many years, as he pursued a wide range of other interests that led to careers as a musician, conductor and director of opera, and Executive Director of an Arts Council based in Westchester County, NY. For some years now he has immersed himself in exploring the endlessly fascinating ways that threads can be interlaced to produce a fabric. He delights in creating singular and functional artworks on commission in his studio in New York’s Hudson Valley.
