Mary Jo Swanson – Lilacs in the Snow

I designed and wove this rug in the middle of a Minnesota winter. The colors were chosen by a friend and the pattern emerged after several iterations of playing with a design for her home. By mid-winter, there is a longing for color amidst the cold, snowy landscape. Knowing that Spring will surely follow with vibrant color, birdsong, and floral fragrances, the title suggested by my granddaughter felt perfect. It embodies what I want the rug to represent in my friend’s home.

Mary Jo Swanson

My name is Mary Jo “MJ” Swanson. I live in Elk River, Minnesota. I am not a long-time weaver, but I am a lifelong learner. My professional background is nursing and healthcare leadership. Having done bedside nursing for 12 years, I had the opportunity to lead some amazing healthcare teams for the remainder of my professional career. Retirement in 2022 opened the door to new opportunities which included more time with family and friends, hiking and somewhat unexpectedly, weaving. My identity as a weaver is evolving; this bio reflects four years of discovery. I am grateful for and excited to be on this fascinating artistic journey.
