I embrace the challenge of using shaft looms to express organic shapes and curves. For this series, I studied plant roots and tree branches for curves designed in the liftplan using 22 shafts. I wove it as a turned tied weave with blocks in the ties. One face shows the blocks in the warp colors. The reverse face shows more of the weft colors, chosen for springtime.
Techniques:
Handwoven scarf in a turned tied weave using 22 ties, designed in the liftplan.
Dimensions:
61″ long x 10.5″ wide.
Materials:
10/2 Tencel, 30/2/4 Tencel, 60/2 silk, 30/2 silk, 30/2 cotton, 30/2 rayon
2 or 3 fine threads were combined for each weft color
Loom:

I embrace the challenge of using shaft looms to express organic shapes and curves with many colors. I begin with design lines inspired by nature including curves formed by rivers and canyons. My current work includes two or more different designs that overlap like a double exposure with blends of colors shadows. I use weaving software and computer-assisted looms, creating a new draft for each piece on a 16-shaft loom in our summer cabin in the mountains and 24-shaft loom in our house. I have been weaving since 1967 and have taught in 9 countries but am mostly retired from teaching. I am still weaving and writing; I have written many articles and one book, Exploring Multishaft Design. I added two new chapters in April of 2025 and revised chapters 1 through 7. It is currently available as 2 pdf files through Lofty Fiber.
I wish that I could be there! I attended CW Seminars from 1988 through 2018 and presented seminars for all but one and also a virtual seminar in 2022.
