Ivy DeHart – Falling Leaves

In creating a piece for Complexity 2026, I set out to harmonize the flowing colors of a painted warp with the intricate curves of a custom twill design. My goal was to evoke the balance and beauty found in nature, where color and form interact seamlessly. The piece features leaf shapes and autumnal hues, framed by a delicate black selvage edge that echoes throughout the design.

Techniques:

Handwoven fancy twill pattern designed by weaver, for a painted warp dyed to move from one fall shade into another in a graduated style.

Dimensions:

Length 82 x Width 11.5

Materials:

8/2 tencel, warp painted, 8/2 weft black

Loom:

Louet Megado 32 shaft loom. 32 shaft original pattern designed using pattern presets taken from Handweaving.net

When we were newly married and living in Loveland Colorado with a new baby, Scott could see that I needed a hobby. He offered to babysit while I attended an adult education class at CSU in Fort Collins. I chose “Learning to Weave” taught by Linda Ligon in 1976 and that was how my love of fiber and weaving began.

After being a “snowbird” for a few years, we found a “nest” in St. George and moved from Eagle, Idaho after 30 years to Utah in November 2019. I love to paint warps and design and weave fancy twills on my 32 harness Louet Megado.

My husband Scott and I have just finished designing and building a 3D printed 16 harness mechanical dobby workshop loom that weighs less than 25 lb and folds up with a warp on it for transport. We will have it at IvysWeavingTools in the vendor marketplace for everyone to look at and try . I will also be selling Modular Painted Warping Boards. I love to share my passion. I also enjoy birding, geology and especially gardening.
