I’m fascinated by this simple lampas weave, where plain weave layers appear either weft-faced or warp-faced on the surface. The warp-faced layer uses a fine weft matching its heavier warp color, while the weft-faced layer uses a fine warp matching its thicker weft. These thin threads create the faced appearance. The thicker weft contains two colors allowing blending in the weft-faced layer — one color, the other, or both. This is a three-shuttle weave.

I started weaving in 2019 after purchasing a kilim while on a cruise. I wondered how it was made so did some online research. By the time I got home I had a Mirrix tapestry loom at my door and was signed up for Rebecca Mezoff’s online Warp and Weft course. Two years later, a neighbor gave me a floor loom and I learned to weave from Peggy Osterkamp’s books. Later, I joined the Contemporary Handweavers of Houston guild which opened up a whole community of fiber explorations for me. I now have a 40 shaft AVL K loom. I love the intellectual aspects of designing cloth and figuring out how to weave those designs. Color gives me joy.
