In recent years my work has mainly been on optical illusions and geometric shapes. Impossible Planes is loosely based on graphic art by Escher. The juxtaposition of various twills was used to create uncertain visual perspectives. All the shapes, including the background, were separated out in layers during the design process in ProWeave and a twill applied to each of them. The weaving is done with one continuous weft from edge to edge, with breaks for each design element.
Techniques:
Freeform handweaving. Various twill tieups on an 8shaft crackle threading
Dimensions:
23.8 X 21.6
Materials:
16/2 Cotton, 8/4 Wool
Loom:
16 shaft Leclerc Weavebird, of which 8 shafts were used for the threading.
